Evolutionary versatility of the avian neck

چکیده

Bird necks display unparalleled levels of morphological diversity compared to other vertebrates, yet it is unclear what factors have structured this variation. Using three-dimensional geometric morphometrics and multivariate statistics, we show that the avian cervical column a hierarchical morpho-functional appendage, with varying magnitudes ecologically driven osteological variation at different scales organization. Contrary expectations given widely ecological functions in species, find regional modularity neck highly conserved, an overall structural blueprint significantly altered only by most mechanically demanding functions. Nevertheless, morphologies vertebrae within subregions more prominent signals adaptation pressures. We also both length allometry nature elongation birds are from vertebrates. In contrast mammals, isometrically head mass and, contrary previous work, achieved predominantly increasing vertebral lengths rather than counts. Birds therefore possess spine may be unique its versatility among extant one that, since origin flight, has adapted function as surrogate forelimb varied niches.

A Simple Model of Unbounded Evolutionary Versatility*

The idea that there are any large-scale trends in the evolution of biological organisms is highly controversial. It is commonly believed, for example, that there is a large-scale trend in evolution towards increasing complexity, but empirical and theoretical arguments undermine this belief. Natural selection results in organisms that are well adapted to their local environments, but it is not c...

Structural and evolutionary versatility in protein complexes with uneven stoichiometry.

Proteins assemble into complexes with diverse quaternary structures. Although most heteromeric complexes of known structure have even stoichiometry, a significant minority have uneven stoichiometry--that is, differing numbers of each subunit type. To adopt this uneven stoichiometry, sequence-identical subunits must be asymmetric with respect to each other, forming different interactions within ...

Evolutionary dynamics of human and avian metapneumoviruses.

Human (HMPV) and avian (AMPV) metapneumoviruses are closely related viruses that cause respiratory tract illnesses in humans and birds, respectively. Although HMPV was first discovered in 2001, retrospective studies have shown that HMPV has been circulating in humans for at least 50 years. AMPV was first isolated in the 1970s, and can be classified into four subgroups, A-D. AMPV subgroup C is m...

The Evolutionary Development of Echocardiography

Echocardiography is a non-invasive diagnostic technique which provides information on cardiac morphology, function, and hemodynamics. It is the most frequently used cardiovascular diagnostic test only after electrocardiography. In less than five decades, the evolution in this technique has made it the basic part of cardiovascular medicine. Herein, the evolution of various forms of echocardiogra...
